On July 22, 1933, oilman Charles Urschel and his wife Berenice were playing cards with friends when Charles was kidnapped at gunpoint by notorious gangster Machine Gun Kelly and taken to a hideout in Texas. Urschel was freed after his family paid a $200,000 ransom. Kelly was captured and spent the rest of his life in prison.

‍Grayce & Robert S. Kerr later moved in the home in 1946. Robert S. Kerr had served as the 12th Governor of Oklahoma and was a three term US Senator from 1948-1963.
