History

Prior to the post war development plans of G.A. Nichols, one of the builders active along 14th Street in Harndale was L.D. Kight, who bought this lot in 1916, took out a building permit for $5000, and started work on a two-story frame home. When completed, it was sold to Edmond J. Mitchell, president of a cotton brokerage.

In 1925, after changing hands once already, the house was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Carey Davenport. A native of Texas, Davenport came to Oklahoma City in 1900 as a representative of a wholesale lumber company. He later move to Arkansas to operate a lumber mill, but moved back to Oklahoma City where he married his wife, Lucille.

In 1977 the house was inherited by their daughter, Maryanna Davenport. Born in Oklahoma City, she attended William Woods College, graduated from Oklahoma City University, and completed graduate work at the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. In 1946 she joined the faculty of OCU as a professor in the speech and drama department.
