History

This transitional home was built in 1940 by Mr. Lace Fitschen, president of the Alexander Drug Company. Interior features included the Art Deco motive which was popular at the time. In 1952 the home was purchased by Jimmy Gaunt, a well known golf professional who remained for the next 35 years. In August of 1987, Shelly and Maria Allen started a gradual rehabilitation.

Jerry and Trudy White purchased the home in 2010 and shared it on the 2011 Home Tour.

At some time in the past, the fireplace was moved to a more convenient location in the living room. Several recent enhancements to the home include replacing non-original tile in the entry and kitchen with oak flooring matched to the original flooring, updating windows with true divided light casements and transom as were original, and construction of a new banister and handrail to match the original which did not need safety codes. A second floor nursery had been converted into a closet that was reclaimed and re-purposed as a study with built-in shelves in a granite top desk. Previous owners had updated the kitchen cabinets but the current homeowners replaced the stove with one that is more compatible with their passion for cooking. The bathrooms were extensively updated in the 1990s. There is a telephone niche in the upstairs hall.

The home is filled with family heirlooms inherited by Trudy at the tender age of four. Her mother carefully stored an 1850s portrait of an ancestor that is a descendent of Fear Brewster of the Mayflower along with the Lincoln rocker and sewing table in the living room as well as the game table in the music room. Their sterling tea set and flatware are also family pieces dating from the 1890s. Family china and etched glassware from the 1920s and 1930s also fill the home. The guest bedroom furniture has been used by four generations of the homeowner’s family. Family heirlooms mingle gracefully with contemporary art, some by the homeowner’s sons, and momentos from their travels for a “collected over the years” style.
