History

Constructed in 1917 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Dunn, the home was designed by the contracting firm of Stewart and Wilderson. It is a Mission-style design, with massive columns, thick walls, and stucco finish. Unusual features include the hipped roof with a broad curvilinear gable, and the stylized Moorish windows on the second floor. The design makes it one of the most unique homes in the neighborhood.

Mary Nelson and Rodney Brown bought the house as newlyweds in 1998 and set to work texturizing the walls in the front room, adding exposed wooden beams to the dining room, designing custom glass doors for a built-in buffet, and stained glass panels for the windows. Walls separating four small rooms at the rear of the house were removed to create a large U- shaped gourmet kitchen with state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances, custom cabinets, and granite countertops. The three bedrooms upstairs were redone with an eye to restoring original charm, and they re-landscaped the front yard. They also built a large family den in the rear of the home and an outdoor covered patio on the west side of the backyard.

At the annual Progressive Porch Party, Rodney was a crowd favorite with the children on 14th Street with his gift of storytelling! Rodney and Mary also enjoyed carving lots of pumpkins for Halloween and placing them along the porch wall.

Current owners Alisa & Jeremy White expressed these thoughts about their home, “We were drawn to the area over 10 years ago because we instantly loved the history behind the neighborhood, the uniqueness of each and every home and the close proximity to downtown. We also love the mature trees, sidewalks and the ease to get to Perle Mesta Park and Harn Park; having raised three kids in the neighborhood, being outdoors has always been important. As Uptown, Midtown and downtown have developed, we love having so many places to walk to—Scissortail Park on Saturday mornings for the farmers market, Tuckers for burgers or Capital Ice Cream for treats. We have ridden the streetcar to the Thunder games and have walked to Oak Valley for beers. It truly is the perfect location with character, charm and beauty all around.”
