Nichols built this distinctive home in the fall of 1919 after taking out a building permit for $8,500. The basic Colonial Revival form was altered by a gabled roof and massive brick columns supporting a broad front porch. The first owners were Susan and Walter H. Vesper. Walter was president of the Vesper Auto Company.  They remained in the house until 1923.

After the home changed hands several times, it was owned during the 1970s first by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shannonhouse, who began a renovation, and then by Maestro Louis Herrera de la Fuente, music director and conductor of the Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra. In 1982 the home passed to Drs. John and Barbara Harley. John, an M.D. at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, and Barbara, a Ph.D. in counseling psychology in private practice, continued the renovation.
