The man who built the home was Fred E. Patterson, who moved to Oklahoma City in 1901 and helped establish the Patterson and Hoffman Company, specialists in wholesale cigars. Operating from their three-story building at 10 E. Main, the partners sold more than six million P&H cigars each year by the 1930s.

In 1927 Patterson and his wife Alice built this Moorish style home distinguished by a tiled roof, arched windows, a limestone door-surround, and stucco finish. The Pattersons remained until 1932.

Later owners included Mr. Morris Schonwald, a Hungarian immigrant who struck oil on his farm near Blackwell; Mr. Temple G. Thompson, an oilman and land developer; and Mr. Neal Horton, a real estate investor who renovated the historic Colcord Building and promoted Bricktown, the innovative adaptive reuse of the old warehouse district downtown. In 1986 Leigh and Thomas Alfred “Al” Dearmon moved into the home. They were longtime residents of the neighborhood, previously living on 19thstreet. The Dearmons had two sons, Jacob and Joshua.

Al worked for Fred Jones and Leigh served as President of the Heritage Hills Associate Board. Al was a longtime supporter of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Leigh died May 28, 1989. In 1992, Al married Betty Anderson. Betty was a longtime resident of the neighborhood having moved to 514 NW 14th in 1966. Al and Betty enjoyed many years in the home with their children and grandchildren. Betty died in December2002. A few years later Al married Rita Gunter, a longtime supporter of the Metropolitan Library and the Oklahoma City Orchestra League Symphony Show House. Al and Rita enjoyed many years on 16th street spending time with family and friends in the home before moving to 20th Street. They turned the home over to son, Jacob, and his wife, Charissa, and their four children.
