Most of the homes on the 400 block of NW 18th were spec homes built by G. A. Nichols. He chose designs that appealed to local buyers based on the needs and trends of the market at that time but, unlike much of Heritage Hills, these homes offered little in terms of customization. In 1924 Nichols sold this home for $10,000 to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Miltenberger. Charlie died soon after the purchase, but Mrs. Miltenberger remained in the home until World War I.

Since then, several families have occupied the place, including Dr. Harry A. Daniels, who remodeled and improved several rooms from 1953 to 1970, and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Maley, who moved into the home in 1973 and remained until 2020. When the Maleys moved in, the home was ensconced in vines that Mrs. Maley single-handedly removed. In terms of updates, the Maleys enlarged the kitchen and remodeled every room downstairs.

The updated kitchen and butler's pantry combine old world charm with modern convenience and ample storage. The design features a central peninsula with a stove and sitting area. There are lots of windows and natural light that make the space very airy and warm.
Current owners, the Carters, have made several updates since purchasing the home in 2020. Of particular interest are the murals painted by Whitney Carter in two rooms and the backyard landscaping and vegetable garden.

The home has been in three movies. The week the Carters purchased the home, they found a Halloween decoration the production team had inadvertently left behind. The Carters have kept it as a souvenir.

After buying this home, the Carters were informed of a long-standing superstition. Sticky notes had been attached to two vases in the home that said "Do not move. These stay." The Maleys shared how the vases were in that exact location when they moved in in 1973 and they were instructed not to move them. The same was true of the owners before them and the owners before them. No one knows who placed the vases there or why. Or, what would happen if, perchance, they were removed! The Carters featured their home on the 2024 Historic Home Tour.
