History

Nichols was always looking for architectural features which would add variety to his basic Colonial Revival and bungalow floorplans. One of the most popular styles, both in Oklahoma City and throughout the nation, was the Prairie look of Frank Lloyd Wright.

On this house, built during the summer of 1920, Nichols used the strong horizontal lines, wide eaves, and massive columns of Wright’s Prairie look. The entire design seems to “hug” the landscape, mocking the low lying, broad plains of the American West. For Nichols, such flourishes added variety and helped sell mass produced housing.

In 1980 the home was purchased by Mr. And Mrs. Max J. Nichols, a native of Oklahoma City and a distant cousin of G.A. Nichols, who had just returned to Oklahoma City to become managing editor of the Journal Record, the leading daily business newspaper in the region. The Nichols remodeled much of the interior.
