History

When the first houses were constructed on 14th, it was common for extended families to live near one another. The family that built the original frame home on this lot, the Crawfords, took that custom to great lengths.

Mr. James F. Crawford, who purchased these lots in 1902, was president of the Louisiana Pine and Cypress Company and the Louisiana Saw Mill Company. His partner in business was his brother, John Crawford, who purchased the lots next door at 419 Northwest 14th. Simultaneously, they built houses on their respective lots, each sharing common characteristics of Prairie farm and Victorian-era Gothic elements of design.

Soon after James moved into his home in 1904, he was joined in the home by his daughter, Mabel, and her husband, William H. Crump, president of a company that manufactured drugs and chemicals. The two families remained in the home until 1918.

The next owner was Mrs. Emory E. Westervelt, a native of Pennsylvania who had helped found the Pioneer Telephone and Telegraph Company, the forerunner of Southwestern Bell in Oklahoma. Like Crawford, Westervelt was a widower whose extended family lived with him. When he moved into the home, he was joined by his daughter, Lucille, her husband, Raybourn H. Smiser, and a brother, George Westervelt.

The son-in-law ran the Smiser Construction Company, started in 1900 by his own father. When Mr. Westervelt died in 1959, the Smisers razed the original frame home and built this transitional brick dwelling. The Smiser family remained in the home until the early 1980s.

The items remaining from the original house include the chimney, the wine cellar and foundation, and a small cellar door.

Michael & Brannon Loomis Mooney purchased the home in 1998. At that time every room in the house except the dining room and the spectacular great room were renovated from the studs. Mike, a professor of civil engineering at OU, did all the framing and demolition work in the renovation. Brannon designed all the renovations, supervised subcontractors, and even made all the window coverings.

The current owners enjoy sharing their beautiful home and coordinating a yearly party for all of 14th Street in front of their yard. Their homemade desserts are always the hit of the party!
