History

Medical pioneer Dr. William W. Rucks purchased this house from G.A. Nichols in 1921. A native of Tennessee, Rucks attended the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt, where he completed his medical degree. In 1898 he moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory, and opened his practice. Duty in the World War I Medical Corps provided an interlude, after which he moved to Oklahoma City and opened the Oklahoma City Clinic.

After the Rucks moved out in 1924, the house was owned by a succession of families that included a pediatrician and two attorneys. In 1960 the home was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Long. Jack, a native of Lawton and a retired Lt. Colonel, and Claudine, a native of Mississippi who eventually rose to vice president with Liberty National Bank, made many improvements. They added a three-quarter bath upstairs, enlarged and remodeled the breakfast room, added a half bath downstairs, added a raised back porch, and replaced the garage.
