History
This two-story brick home constructed in 1921 was built by G. A. Nichols as a duplex using his basic plans for a Colonial home. He also added a sweeping front porch to the design. The first owner was Mr. John Hommes, an engineer with the Fine Arts Company, a printing company. In the 1980s the home was remodeled by Mrs. Betty F. Anderson.
When the downstairs bathroom was remodeled, a 1930 newspaper was found in the wall. This leads the current owner to question the assessor's office dating that it was built in 1921, as it feels like a late 20's or early 30's house.
The home has lower ceilings than found in other houses in the neighborhood which would also seem to indicate later construction.
The duplex has now been converted to a single-family home. The upstairs kitchen, living and dining rooms are now a master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, closet, and laundry room.
This home illustrates how a duplex can be reconfigured to a modern single-family home without significant structural changes.
Mary Bingaman featured the home on the 2012 and 2022 Historic Home Tours.
