History

This simple bungalow was constructed in 1922. The first owners were Mr. and Mrs. John Howard Payne. A native of Tennessee, John was a graduate of Cumberland University Law School who moved to Oklahoma City during the boom in 1911 and became active in politics. He served as assistant county attorney, county tax ferret, and alternate delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1924. Mrs. Payne was a longtime teacher at Wilson school. After Mrs. Payne’s death in 1956, the house was passed on to her niece, Betty Ben Garvin, a native of Chickasha who retired as secretary/treasurer of the Wico Oil Company in1972.
