Stephen S. Chandler, the younger brother of G.A. Nichols' partner, Horace Chandler, purchased these lots in 1924, just two years after he graduated from law school at the University of Kansas. In 1943 he was appointed U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Oklahoma, a position he held for the next 46 years.

While in the home, the Chandlers added two wings, one a sun porch with a sleeping room above, the other a library with a second floor sleeping room. They also added a half bath downstairs and a full bath upstairs, all designed by architect Bob Jenks of Kansas City.

In 1951 the Chandlers sold the Country French house to Mr. and Mrs. John B. Dudley, Jr. Mr. Dudley was an attorney, while Mrs. Dudley was the daughter of Thomas Hanna, president of Baker, Hanna, and Blake, one of the region's largest wholesale dry goods companies. As a child, Mrs. Dudley had lived with her family at 421 NW 18th. Mr. Dudley became the first president of HPI in 1969.

The home was sold by the Dudley estate in 1988 to Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Helm, who repaired the roof, installed a zoned heating and air conditioning system, refinished wood floors, and generally remodeled every room.
