History
In 1923, Mr. & Mrs. Frederick E. Patterson and his business partner Henry Hoffman bought adjoining lots on 19th Street, Mr. Patterson and his partner were Territorial entrepreneurs who in 1901 had begun as wholesale Cigar suppliers, expanded to include Gastream home heating and cooking appliances, and by 1929 operated a billiard parlor and sold wholesale billiard supplies. They used the same architect at the same time to build Colonial Revival homes. The home features a decorative entryway with classical detailing and gabled dormers. The entryway is highlighted with an eyelid arch, sidelights, and fanlight around the front door. There is a porte-cochere with a sleeping room above, and the off-set porch is supported by classical columns.
The Pattersons remained in the home until 1927 when it became the home of oilman J. Ben Russell and his family. The Russells remained until 1974 when Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Thompkins bought the home. The Thompkins converted the porch to a library and built a brick patio. They featured the home on the 1975 Home Tour.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harris purchased the home in 1983 and completely renovated and redecorated before featuring the home on the 1984 and 1991 Home Tours. The ceiling in the master bath was raised to include a dormer which gives the room additional natural light and architectural interest.
Rita and Steve Chapman purchased the home in November 2015, their second home in the neighborhood. They featured the home on the 2017 Home Tour.
