History

This Georgian Colonial Revival was one of the owner-built homes, constructed in 1923 by Ren C. and Henry R. Hoffman. In 1901 Hoffman and partner Fred Patterson organized the firm of Patterson and Hoffman to specialize in the wholesale cigar trade. They gradually expanded their line of goods to include Gasstream radiators, stoves, furnaces, and water heaters. By 1921, when Hoffman and Patterson bought adjoining lots on 19th Street, they also operated the Empire Billiard Parlor and sold wholesale billiard supplies. The Hoffmans had three sons, Henry, Jr., Joseph, and Edmund.

The Hoffmans remained in the home until 1946, when they sold to Virginia and Dr. F. Redding Hood. Born in Oklahoma Territory, Hood received his pharmacy and medical degrees from the University of Oklahoma, and later served as Chief of Medical Service at LaGarde Hospital in New Orleans during World War II. He also taught in the school of pharmacy and the medical school at OU. The Hoods had three children, Frederick, Richard, and Carol. After moving into the house they converted the billiard room into a library, rebuilt the sunroom, and remodeled the kitchen and one bathroom. The Hoods featured their home on the 1971 Home Tour.
