History

While most of the homes on the 200 block of 19th were Colonial Revival, Nichols and Chandler selected a bungalow style for this addition to the block. Distinctive features included exposed rafter tails, oversized gable brackets, a low pitched, sweeping front porch, and lapped siding on the second floor. It was a good example of the bungalow craze sweeping through the city and region in 1917 and 1918.

Effie and Joseph L. McKeown purchased the home. A native of Wisconsin, McKeown was an accountant who helped organize the State Examiner and Inspector’s Office in 1907, then became business manager at Oklahoma A&M. He later served one term in the Oklahoma Legislature and entered the oil business. Effie remained in the home until 1943. The house was later occupied by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Berry and their three children. James was an early day county assessor.
