History
This stucco-clad home was built by G.A. Nichols in 1918 in the “Prairie House" vernacular with broad overhangs and a sweeping front porch. Featuring a center door into the living area, the downstairs follows a typical saddle-back floorplan with a single stair splitting at the bottom to go to the living room on the one side and into the kitchen on the other.
The original owners were Helen and Stephen F. Veazey. Stephen, born in Milan, Tennessee, was a veteran of the Spanish-American War who moved to Oklahoma City in 1900 just as the economic boom was beginning. He first worked as a night watchman, then as a delivery boy with a small drugstore.
In 1906 he formed a partnership with boyhood friend, Tom Roach, and purchased the Security Drug Store, located at Grand and Harvey. Nine years later he married Helen Finerty, the sister of Roy and Frank Finerty, two brothers who founded Fidelity National Bank. With their financial backing, Veazey bought out his partner, joined his brother, and started expanding. By World War II, the Veazey Drug Store chain included twenty-two stores, a large warehouse, and more than 500 employees.
While in the house, the Veazeys redecorated several times, enclosed the east sleeping porch, and added a bathroom. They also built large bookshelves in the living room that arched over the fireplace and covered two windows.
The Veazey’s son, William, and his wife, Jane, later lived in the home from 1955 to 1960 before they moved to NW 17th.
Jane Jenkins and Howell Felsenthal moved to the home in 2010. In 2014, they created an open kitchen for the home and Howell built a chandelier for the dining room. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the second floor. Two of the bedrooms have en-suite "sleeping porches". Originally, the home had four bedrooms and one bath, but within the last 20 years, a bedroom was converted to create a master bath. In 2011, the owners built a new garage in the rear of the home which followed the original footprint of the two-story garage. Jane and Howell featured their home on the 2019 Home Tour.
