The homes on 20th, combining quality construction with moderate prices, appealed to a wide variety of buyers, including the successful businessman who bought this home in 1918, Thomas S. Hanna. A native of Texas, he was president of Baker, Hanna, and Blake Wholesale Dry Goods, a firm he and his two cousins built into an enterprise grossing more than $2.5 million a year.

During the 1970s the home was extensively rehabilitated by Marianne and Dr. Jerry Vannatta. Then, in 1983, it was purchased by Dr. and Mrs. William A. Herndon, who changed the paint scheme from beige with white trim to white with green trim. They also replaced rotting wood, added a large deck, and built a two-story addition and a family room on the back of the house.
