History
Built at a cost of $10,000 in the spring of 1918, this was one of the most expensive homes on the block. The brick exterior features a decorative porch with curvilinear gables and massive brick columns. Other distinguishing features include the brick railing around the porch, the sunburst windows above the first-floor windows and doors, and wide projecting eaves.
It was sold to Mr. and Mrs. James S. Bryan in September of 1918 for $17,500. Bryan, an oilman, in turn sold it to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Schonwald six years later for $27,400. Schonwald was a native of Austria who had immigrated to America in 1891. He first settled in Guthrie, then moved to Ponca City where he became active in the oil patch. By the 1920s, when he and his wife moved to the home on 19th, he was president of the Security National Bank of Blackwell and a prominent oilman. They remained in the home until 1944.
In 1985, after the home had changed hands a couple of times, it was restored by Mr. and Mrs. Joel Champlin. They replaced the roof, repointed the brick, reinforced the foundation, updated the kitchen, and generally remodeled.
