History
Annie and Dr. Ray M. Balyeat were the first owners of this house. Born in 1889, Ray grew up on a farm in Lincoln County, then attended the University of Oklahoma where he completed a masters in chemistry in 1916. He was named State Chemist of Oklahoma and enrolled in the University of Oklahoma Medical School.
After completing an internship, he opened the Balyeat Hay Fever and Asthma Clinic and became a specialist in the study and treatment of allergic diseases. With two rooms in the First National Bank Building, he and his associates quickly built a regional reputation. Within four years Balyeat moved his expanding practice to the newly opened Medical Arts Building downtown and added one medical associate, two chemists, two botanists, four technicians, and five clerks. By 1930 he was treating more than 100 patients a day. He later was elected president of the American Association for the Study of Allergy, wrote two books on the subject, and was considered a leading authority on allergy across the nation. The Balyeats and their two children remained in the home until 1928 when they moved to a larger house. The home on 21st, distinguished by its classical portico, side porch and simple bungalow lines, changed hands numerous times until 1986, when it was purchased by Mr. And Mrs. Joe B. Goodrich, Jr., who made exterior repairs, painted, added a new roof, and renovated the kitchen.
