Part of the reason for renewed interest in Winans Addition during and after World War I was G.A. "Doc" Nichols, Oklahoma City's most ambitious developer from 1903 to1930. Nichols bought large blocks of the undeveloped neighborhood and began building homes and selling lots as demand increased. In 1918 he sold these lots for $2,560 to Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. Nance.

Nance, a conductor with the Frisco Railroad, hired the nationally known firm of Aurelius-Swanson, took out a building permit for $5,000, and started work on a new "airplane bungalow," complete with a half-story on the second floor.

Subsequent owners included Luther Jones, the son of city father C.G. “Gristmill" Jones, Benjamin Mills, president of the Oklahoma City Stockyards Bank, and Harold McEwen, president of the McEwen-Halliburton Department Store. In 1949 it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Myles Smith, who rebuilt and added arches to the front porch, remodeled the interior, and added stucco to the exterior.
