History
The generation of businessmen emerging after World War I included Nichols and Chandler, the two men who were so instrumental in developing the northern blocks of Heritage Hills. This house, completed in 1918, was purchased by Horace Chandler, who moved in with his wife, Pattye, and their children.
The Chandler family had been in the home only a short while when Horace was stricken by the deadly influenza epidemic sweeping Europe and the U.S. When Horace tragically died, the house on 19th was put on the market.
The new owners were Vernon Vineyard and Fanchon Hefley Harris. Vernon was born in 1881 in Kentucky. Fanchon was born in 1886 in Trenton, Tennessee. In 1901 Vernon moved to Oklahoma, where he entered the banking business and read for the law. After living in towns from Weatherford to Holdenville, he moved to Oklahoma City in1916 where he met Fanchon, a schoolteacher. They had two sons, Vernon, Jr., and William, and a daughter, Margaret. In the city directory Vernon listed himself as an “investor.” By the mid-1920s, when he sold the house on 19th and moved to16th, he was a director of Liberty National Bank, president of a motor supply company, and vice president of a real estate company. Vernon died April 23,1954, at age 72 and Fanchon died December 19, 1960, at age 73.
