History
The people who moved onto Classen Drive in the 1920s were businessmen and professionals. A good example of this young, post-war generation was the man who bought this house from Nichols in 1925, Dr. Earl McBride.
Born June 16, 1891, in Kansas, McBride grew up in Watonga, Oklahoma, then attended Epworth College and the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated with a degree in 1912. He then attended Columbia University and completed his medical degree in 1914.
After the war, McBride returned to Oklahoma City to practice what was considered a “special branch of medicine,” orthopedic surgery. In 1923 he opened the McBride Clinic, followed two years later by the McBride Reconstruction Hospital. In 1989 McBride’s Clinic, now the Bone and Joint Hospital, is still known as one of the leading orthopedic hospitals in the country. McBride, his wife, Pauline, and their three children lived in the house on Classen Drive until 1943. After it was occupied by several families, the home was sold in 1975 to Darrell Robinson, a pharmacist who remodeled the interior and added bay windows on the front.
