History

Nichols was adept at taking a popular floorplan and adding just enough variations to enhance the marketability. Here, on a home built in 1925, he took a floorplan similar to the one used at 1600 Classen Drive and added a flat roof, Mission-style embellishments, and stucco veneer. The arrangement of rooms, the central entryway, and the five-sided sleeping room and sun parlor are the same.

Described in a newspaper advertisement as “the Home Masterpiece,” the place included a patio garden with swimming pool, lily pond, and double garage with  living quarters. It was sold to Mr. Earl R. Ernsberger, an engineer from Indiana who moved to Oklahoma City in 1921 to purchase a group of utilities in Southwest Oklahoma. While in the home, he and his wife added the ornamental fence, reportedly imported from an estate once owned by Napoleon Bonaparte.

In 1976, after it changed hands several times, the home was purchased by Ms. Betty Elizabeth Holt, a native of Checotah who operated her own communications consulting firm. She replumbed, rewired, rebuilt the garage, converted the garage quarters to a studio, and generally remodeled. In later years J. David King featured the home on the 1997 Historic Home Tour.
