History

This was one of the last homes built in the neighborhood, completed by Nichols in 1929. By the time it was constructed, a popular feature of design was the decorative stonework around the doors and windows. Similar stonework, while rare in Heritage Hills, is common in neighborhoods developed during the early 1930s, such as Crown Heights.

The home was built for Margaret and Kent B. Hayes. A native of Ryan, Oklahoma, Hayes grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Dartmouth College. After the war he returned to Oklahoma City, entered the banking business, and married Margaret Vose, the daughter of Richard Vose and the sister of Charles Vose, Sr. While he lived in the house on Classen Drive, Hayes rose through the ranks at the First National Bank to become vice president and trust officer.

In 1951 the Hayes family sold the home to Mr. Lester Cowden, a native of Shawnee who moved to Oklahoma City in 1934 and organized the Retail Merchants Collection Service and other ventures. After moving in with his wife and six children, Cowden installed a new heating system, replumbed, corrected structural problems, enlarged the kitchen, and repaired the slate roof.

The total rehabilitation of the home awaited the family of Lu and K. Blake Hoenig, who traded their home next door at 1525 Classen to the owner of this home, Mrs. Katherine McCraw. The Hoenigs stripped wallpaper, refinished floors, and painted and papered walls and trim.
