History

Nichols was a master at creating stylistic variety while controlling construction costs. By keeping prices in the $12,000 to $15,000 range, he quickly sold most of the homes on the 1000 block of 14th to people from all walks of life. One of the best known of these first generation owners was the man who bought this home, Mr. Charles C. Childers.

A native of Arkansas, Childers was a professional politician who started his career as a county sheriff in 1896. In 1912, after moving to Enid, he was elected to the state legislature. Other elective offices included state auditor in 1922 and corporation commission in 1926. He and his wife, Elizabeth, remained in the home until 1947, when their widowed daughter, Ruth Turner, moved in. A deputy county assessor, she remained until 1975.
