History

This home was built by Rex Harlow. Rex and his brother Victor organized the Harlow publishing company soon after World War I. They published books and magazines, but their bread and butter was Harlow‘s Weekly, the leading political and economic publication in the state during the 1920s. Rex was a feature writer as well as publisher. He also wrote several books, including Who’s Who in Oklahoma and Oklahoma’s Younger Leaders. Rex and his wife Ruby lived in the house on 14th until 1934.

Ten years later, after changing hands several times, the home was purchased by three sisters, Maurine, Fern, and Maryan Hoover. Natives of Kansas, the three sisters had gone their separate ways after college. Maurine was the first to move to Oklahoma City, joining the faculty at Oklahoma High School, later renamed Central High, in 1918. Fern, the oldest of the three, later joined her sister at Central High. The Hoover sisters would long be remembered by several generations of students.
